Do I really need Uninsured (and Underinsured) Motorist coverage?

That is a great question because as the driving population continues to grow in Georgia, so do the number of drivers without any insurance. In 2015, a full 12% of Georgia’s drivers had no car insurance. Unfortunately, if you experience an accident where the at-fault driver has no insurance, you could be out a significant amount of money including medical bills, lost wages, and property damage. Uninsured Motorist coverage is optional in Georgia if there is no loan on the vehicle. Also, there are two different types of Uninsured Motorist coverage; “Traditional Uninsured Motorist Coverage (Reduced by)” which costs less than the “New Uninsured Motorist Coverage (Added to)”.

Both coverages pay differently whenever you are involved in an accident and the at-fault driver is underinsured. In an underinsured motorist situation, additional financial resources are available if the liability of the at-fault driver is insufficient to cover your medical bills, wages, or property damage. The better option which is more expensive is Added to Uninsured Motorist coverage. It provides up to the full limit of protection over and above the at-fault drivers liability coverage. Reduced by Uninsured Motorist coverage will only pay up to the difference between the at-fault driver’s Liability Coverage and your Traditional Uninsured Motorist coverage. It is important to know that in some cases, Reduced by Uninsured Motorist coverage could render you, as the victim driver with no Uninsured Motorist payout. Please consult with an insurance professional for additional information.

If the at-fault driver has no liability insurance, then both the Added to and Reduced by Uninsured Motorist coverages will pay the same. If there is a lien on your car, the lienholder will require Uninsured Motorist coverage to protect their asset.
